Non-PTA means the phone is not registered with PTA. JV means the phone is tied to one carrier. They are different things. The difference matters because the remedy differs. A roaming data eSIM works on an unregistered phone. On a carrier-locked phone no other SIM or eSIM works at all — not ours, not anyone’s. One phone can be both.
Two problems, two different answers
In one line: PTA is about whether the phone is registered in Pakistan. A carrier lock is about whether the operator that sold the phone tied it to their own network.
- A non-PTA phone: PTA’s DIRBS FAQ gives it 60 days of service once a local SIM goes in, and none after that without registration. Phones on roaming sit outside that.
- A JV or carrier-locked phone: no SIM or eSIM works on it except its own operator’s. PTA does not come into this at all.
- A phone can be both: brought in from abroad, locked there, and unregistered here.
Our data eSIM works in the first case and not in the second, which is why both are worth checking separately before buying.
The PTA check: is the phone registered?
PTA names three ways, and all three are free:
- Send the IMEI as a text message to 8484.
- Dial the USSD code *8484# from the phone.
- Enter the IMEI on PTA’s DVS website and read the status.
PTA also advises checking each IMEI separately on a phone that has two, and buying only where the status reads "PTA Compliant/Registered".
The lock check: is the phone tied to a network?
On an iPhone, Apple documents the route: "Open the Settings app. Tap General. Tap About. If ‘No SIM restrictions’ appears next to Carrier Lock, your iPhone is unlocked."
Apple is equally plain about who can undo it: "Apple can't unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier. Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone." A seller saying it will unlock later is not enough.
On Android the surest test is practical: put a working SIM from another network into the phone. Signal and data mean it is open; a message like "SIM not supported" means it is locked.
The eSIM check: does the phone have one at all?
A third thing, and unrelated to either the lock or PTA: whether the phone has eSIM hardware.
We checked every model one by one for the phone list, so look yours up there. On the phone itself, an EID number means eSIM hardware is present.
Where the EID lives is documented by the makers: on iPhone under Settings, General, About; on Pixel under Settings, About phone, then SIM status. Dialling *#06# shows the same details on many phones, but neither Apple’s nor Google’s own page mentions that code, so the route above is the one to trust.
A short list before you buy
- Check the IMEI status on 8484 — both IMEIs, if the phone has two.
- Check the lock: Carrier Lock on an iPhone, another network’s SIM on Android.
- Look the model up in our phone list to see whether eSIM works.

Questions
Will an eJugaar eSIM work on a JV phone?
No. A carrier-locked phone takes no SIM or eSIM but its own operator’s. That is why checkout asks you to confirm first, and why the refund policy states it plainly.
My phone is PTA registered — can it still be locked?
Yes. Registration happens in Pakistan; the lock was applied by whoever sold the phone. They are separate things, checked separately.
If the phone turns out to be JV, do I get my money back?
The refund policy puts a carrier-locked phone outside it, because no eSIM works on one. That is exactly why the check belongs before the purchase.
